Yep. I am not talking about stuff you only read in books. Roleplaying is a whole different world, something away from the real world. I love roleplaying because I can use my imagination without being put down for it. I have been roleplaying for about three years now(since 1996). It's not to say I am an expert in it, but it is enough to say I know what is going on:)
For many who are beginners, your probably wondering about the dice RolePlayers use. Don't worry! When I first started, the only thing I was confused about 'sides STATS was the dice. I knew what the regular 6 sided die(D6) was and I knew what the 20 side die(D20) was, but I had no clue what the 4 sided die(D4) was or the "D8," "D10," etc. But, if it wasn't for the group of friends I was with, I would of never got it. That is one of the keys to having an enjoyable roleplaying game, friends who are more than willing to help you out in parts you don't understand in, heck, they want you to have fun so they'll help ya. Another thing which I found helpful was to ask for help. But, back to the dice. After some help in what die was what, I started to get the hang of it. It takes practice to know what die is what and if you start roleplaying consistently, then the dice will become second hand nature to you:) I found it easier to remember the dice by matching it to something I was familiar with. The D6 is your regular die, so that one was the easiest to think about, gambling. The D20, well, heck, it's the biggest one no brainer there:) The D8 was also easy because I play a Priestess a lot and the D8 deals with healing points so D8 and healing. And on and on.
The second thing I found the hardest while roleplaying, which is also the most tideous, was making up STATS. Sheesh! STATS is what makes your character your character. You've got your strength, wisdom, intelligence, etc. Now, that doesn't seem bad right? Well, it isn't bad when you role for the STATS but when you configure it to where you want the points to go where then you get a headache. To be honest, making up a character is the hardest thing one can do. Heck, do you want your character to be quick on his/her feet and flexible? Then you'd be a thief. But what if you want your character to be strong and big? Then you'd be gladiator, warrior, or knight. Or what if you want you character to be a quick thinker? Then you'd be...well, you get the idea:) But, making a character is also the fun part. That character your making is you, the you that you may fantasize being. Ever wanted to be an Elf, dwarf, halfling, etc? That is what I love most about roleplaying, the race that you want to be. But, once you have figured out what your character's STATS are, you have a book that'll help you figure it out down to percentages and how much your character can get hit before he/she dies, etc. Unless you know every STAT by heart, that's ok. People who've been playing longer than me still go to the books. What helps the most is the sheet of paper that holds the very esence of you character, the players sheet. But, like I said, STATS are the tideous part of roleplaying.
But, what makes a character real? Why, you of course! You can make or break you character. After all, your the one who is on that quest your GM sent you on. GM? Game Master of course, the person that tells you the story where your in the story, the heroe. Roleplaying is based on story. Instead of reading the book where you already know the plot and the characters, your the characters trying to figure out the plot. You are the one who makes the story. When you read fantasy books, don't you ever wish that you were one of the characters doing these things that no ordinary human in this world can do? Well, here is your chance, roleplaying makes it happen because you make it happen.
I haven't played every game that there is. I'm more of a D&D person. But, you have a variety of roleplaying games to choose from. Try them all and you will find your nitch. I found mine in D&D. And from here, I will go on about my experiences and them trial 'n errors:)
